We all know that working for someone else's dream while our own creative artistic passion gathers dust on the shelf is a fate worse than endless purgatory. Amiright??
So what's an Artist to do? I mean, we have to pay the bills! We have to put gas in the car and food on the table! We can't just play around all day!
But let me ask you this: What if playing were the same as making money?... What if having fun doing what you love all day were the WAY you made your money? THAT is what we are shooting for, my friend. The intersection of playing and loving what you're doing and the influx of CASH.
That's what I call the Passion to Income Equation. That's the Holy Grail, right?
But of course.
But this post is not about how to find the Holy Grail (pick any one of my previous posts with keywords like "how to make money with your talent" for those instructions). This post is about motivation and the reasons why working on growing your art business is so important.
1) You get to be the boss
You're finally in charge! Want to take an extra 10 minutes for lunch? Go for it! Want to take an extra week's vacation? You got it. Want to take a midday nap? There's the couch.
YOU get to make the rules.
That also means that YOU get to create your own artistic vision. YOU decide how much time it takes to finish a project. YOU develop your own body of work based on your OWN dreams. You're in charge of it ALL.
2) You can reward your employees as you want
That means you! Wait, are you the only employee? You DO have to reward yourself for work well done. It's crucial to your self motivation that you develop your own reward system.
Maybe it's as simple as giving yourself time to doodle every evening after working hard at your creative business projects. Maybe it means buying yourself a new gadget when you sell that next piece. It's up to you. Just be sure to give yourself the carrot.
3) You can keep your own promises
No disappointments or dashed hopes here! You're in charge so you get to set the bar. Promise yourself you're going to create 100% of your income from your art by the year 2020 and GO FOR IT.
4) You decide who to hire and promote for your own team
No more jerks in the lunchroom. No more annoying coworkers blabbing about their boring weekend while you're trying to work. No more competitive backstabbers just waiting for you to make a misstep. Just YOU and the team YOU get to hand pick to help you work on YOUR dream. Heaven!
5) You're allowed to pursue your passion
Uh, it's your business. How cool is that?? That's the Passion to Income Equation in action!
6) You have the opportunity to develop new skills
There are always so many new things to learn! Scary? Hell yeah. Super rewarding? Hellz YEAH! The first time you figure out how to use a new app like MailChimp or Audacity or Periscope, you will definitely feel the need for a DANCE MOMENT! Also exciting is the first time you see your press release info IN PRINT! Coolest. Moment. Ever.
7) You get to engage your creativity every day
All. The. Time. Both as an Artist and as an Entrepreneur. It takes creativity to run your own business successfully.
8) You will never be bored again
Boredom does not exist when you're running your own business. When you're not creating your art, you're marketing, promoting and/or selling your work. When you're not managing your bookkeeping, you're working on your art.
Making any percentage of your income from your art or talent creates more freedom and independence for your soul. You're the ultimate Boss of You!
