10 Simple Ways to Market Your Art

So, now that you're thinking about your art more like a business, less like a hobby, you're going to have to think about MARKETING that business.

Every single person who owns and operates a small business -- that includes both of us, my friend -- is also in the business of marketing. We have to promote what we do. Otherwise, no one will know or care about what we do! Sad but true.

Here's the thing: It's not rocket science. There is nothing to be afraid of. Like anything, marketing and promoting your work just takes research and consistent practice. Right here, right now I'm GIFTING you 10 ways to get the job done:

1) Set up as many social media profiles as you can reasonably expect to juggle in any given week. If you took my Social Media Rock Stars 101 class, you already have an excellent idea of how to manage the basics. (If you missed that class, I'll be opening a new group very soon, watch for it!)

2) USE your social media! Yes, you will have to actually post and interact with other humans... And then talk about anything that interests you. The more your fans and followers get to know the real you, the better. Truly!

3) Be consistent with your profile picture across all your social media. Put the same pic on your business card! Get people recognizing your face.

4) Speaking of business cards... Get some! Your name, telephone and email address in a simple black font below your black and white picture is more than sufficient. Set aside the $25 and get them printed at Vistaprint or Zazzle or Staples. Just do it.

5) Offer your current fans and clients something extra special that no one else gets, like a free item, an extra item or some special VIP time with you.

6) Offer your new or potential fans and clients something different to entice them to follow you, like a video, a free goodie or a recorded peek into your life and/or work.

7) Get out and network in person, too. Gallery hop. Go to gigs. Attend book signings and readings. Check fashion shows and magazine launches. Get invites to any events you can and GO! Meet people, talk to people, find out what's happening in your industry and tell people about what you do.

8) Offer to partner with Artists you respect. Brainstorm project ideas. Offer to take the lead with organizational duties if that's your thing. Find fresh ways to present yourself and your art.

9) Contact your local media and tell them what you're up to. Radio, TV, print all need stories to report on. Lots of people get press, why shouldn't you?? All it takes is persistence.

10) Oh! Have I mentioned?... TALK ABOUT yourself and your work! As much as possible. To everyone. All. The. Time.

I know, I know, if you haven't done any marketing before, it can feel like a real drag. Luckily, I'm now also offering Promotional Services on an hourly basis. It's such an important service that I booked an Artist client before I even launched it officially!!!

At the moment, I'm taking a limited number of promo clients, so hit reply to talk about this essential service with me ASAP and reserve your spot!

See & Be Seen on Social Media

Follow on Bloglovin

Wait, where are you going, don't go already! We haven't even started talking yet!

I know, I know you don't like social media, maybe you don't trust it, you think it's stupid, maybe you just don't get it. So, I promise to keep this short and sweet. If you're still not interested after 30 seconds, then aufwiedersehen, baby, it's cool. Deal? Good.

Do you dread going to your day job every day?

Do you love your art / music / writing / performing more than any other work that you could possibly do?

Would you do your creative work for free all day every day if you could?

Yeah, I thought so.

Here's the deal: If you want to work at dreary day jobs less, do your creative work more, and make money doing mostly the stuff you love to do, you're going to have to make some changes.

Yes, changes.

Today, I'm only going to push THREE changes on you. Here they are:

Change #1 DECIDE Is your art your hobby, or your business? Hobby... or business. What's it gonna be? Decide.

Are you a paper pusher or an Artist? Are you a receptionist or a Musician? Are you a teacher or an Author? What's it gonna be, baby? Who ARE you? DECIDE.

Change #2 ANNOUNCE Let's assume you decide you are an Artist of some sort. Awesometastic!

Congrats on digging deep, being honest with yourself and finding the courage to OWN it. Remember, the biggest difference between those famous Artists and you is that they, at some point in life, developed some major chutzpah. You can, too.

Courage and confidence just take practice. So practice! Tell people that you're an Artist. Tell them about your work. Invite them to your next gig. Tell them where to buy your latest book. Tell them why your latest show is gonna be a huge hit!

Oh wait, do you already have a promoter? A manager? An agent who does that shit for you? No?

Then guess what honey. If you want to make bank, you have to do the promoting yourSELF.

Go talk it up!!

Change #3 SOCIALIZE Have you noticed that everyone and their mother is using social media to promote themselves these days? Actors, singers, writers, artists and musicians are setting up profiles all over the place. Madonna has a HUGE following on Instagram. Beyonce recently debuted her latest iTunes "CD" on her Instagram account, skipped right OVER the whole live media circus and took it straight to her fans.

Oh wait, you don't have any fans online yet?

Well guess what, honey ~ you have to work at building your fan base online. You HAVE to get out there, see and be seen. Trust me, I'm not even a celeb and I've built up from nothing to 8000+ followers across my social media landscape over the past 18 months just by getting out there. You can do it, too!

Want to know the coolest part?

It's all FREE. That's right, just about every social media platform is zero cost, free online real estate. No membership payments. No cover charges. Just you and your fans.

Here's where I can help: I'm launching a 30 Day Challenge for Creative & Performing Artists ONLY, starting April 15th. How to Be a Social Media Rock Star will take you from zero to 100 in just 4 weeks. I'll be there holding your hand the whole time.

Let's do this.

Just Say Thank You! ~ New Video

Enough with the humble pie. Stop avoiding your greatness! Start OWNING your badassed awesometastical fabulosity and watch your confidence grow. By MILES.

Creating Connections

For the whole month of September, we have been talking about creativity and dreams for speaking and success. Those things that fuel the imagination and keep us motivated. The means and the results. Now that we're approaching the end of September AND the end of 2013 is less than 100 days away, I am feeling like I don't want to waste any time! Like I really want to zoom in on the important stuff. Especially in light of my partner's challenging current family situation. I want to focus on family, on love, on people, on connections.

Connections, the ties that bind, the glue -- that's the stuff that keeps us going and coming back for more. Take me, for example. Why do I do what I do, working around the clock to help people overcome their fears? Because I love my daughter. That's right. My daughter is my A#1 reason for everything that I do. If it weren't for her existence, I would have curled up into a ball in the corner a long time ago and just given up. True story.

But because of that connection, that responsibility, that LOVE, I have a need and a desire to create and succeed. I want to provide for her and set an example for her. That connection totally rocket fuels me. Every single day.

Part of what I do to meet those goals is make more connections with lots more people. (I think they call that networking, lol...) For the past several years since I moved back to the USA from Germany, I have slowly cultivated a tribe of mostly like-minded people around me. From close friends and immediate family, to friends and relatives, to acquaintances and colleagues, to virtual associates and local people I know by sight. These all constitute my collection of connections. I have cultivated them both online and offline because that is how I organize my business and my life.

Creating and cultivating connections keeps us focused on what's really important in life: People. Without people in our life, we are, well, alone. People make life worth living. Being alone is no good for our business life nor our social life!

There is nothing on this Earth quite like the satisfaction I feel when I know I've hit the sweet spot with a connection. Like today. Today, I spent two glorious hours on the phone ***in my PJs*** with my joint venture partner, Angel Quintana, brainstorming on a super juicy cool project we are creating together, launching in early 2014. It was magical! And get this: We have never even met in person. Yet! We have only ever seen each other on Skype, maybe once. The rest has been telephone talk and Facebook messaging. Do we care?? Not one bit. We've created a connection between us that sparks our imaginations and works for us both.

Or like last week, when I met a whole bunch of my boyfriend Marc's family members for the very first time, in a very sad situation during funeral services for his only brother. Over twenty years ago, his late brother had a daughter but due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, she had no connection with his side of the family until last week. Since then, we are now in close touch with Marc's niece, a new and very special connection. I also found new connections with two of Marc's oldest friends as well as his mother and her longtime partner. Creating connections throughout the week gave this difficult, emotional time a much appreciated, bright silver lining.

How can you create more connections in your life or for your business? Do you practice networking? Do you belong to a group that does stuff that you like doing? Do you regularly keep in touch with your connections via telephone, Skype, email or snail mail? Is there a connection you would like to rekindle?

Don't wait. Reach out.
