Claim Your Independence

With all the Independence Day celebrations going on here in the US and abroad, especially in France on their Bastille Day this week, I can't help but reflect on how important the ideas of freedom and independence are to me and to so many of my friends and clients. Thinking about their importance led me to look up some relevant quotes. Here's what I found:

"The basic need of the creator is independence" - Ayn Rand

Oh yeah, that one is so true! How much easier is it to create our work with the freedom to create as we please?? How much harder is it to create when we're restricted and limited by rules?

"Injustice in the end produces independence" - Voltaire

Another gem by the genius Voltaire. Anyone who's ever been wronged knows how right he is.

"The freedom to lead and plan your own life is frightening if you have never faced it before" - Betty Friedan

Wow. That is one powerful statement by that iconic feminist leader. Decades later, it still holds true for so many of us, female and male, especially as we strike out on our entrepreneurial paths as Artists. Are you leading and planning your own life, instead of what's expected of you by others, for the first time? Scary shit, right??

"Do not let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice" - Steve Jobs

This quote from his 2005 Stanford Commencement speech lives on as the clarion call to creatives everywhere. Follow your inner voice or drown. It's that scary simple.

"Rule your mind or it will rule you" - Horace

Training your brain to focus and concentrate on YOUR thoughts instead of the monkey mind chatter of a thousand other impulses is the key to inner freedom. Meditate daily and I swear to you, you will become the ultimate Boss of You!

Quit Talking Dirt About Your Money: The Art of Money, Part 5

Why is everyone so down on money? Why do so many people talk dirt about it and the people who have it? Why do people who badmouth money think that money will want to have anything to do with them??

Part Five of my 2015 series, The Art of Money is all about how to quit badmouthing the very thing you want so badly to possess. I wrote a blog about this very topic last spring called 6 Ways to Get Your $$$ Out of the Toilet that also appeared in Holistic Fashionista magazine Issue #11 as "Respect Your Money". I'm sharing it with you here today:

April 4, 2014

Here's the thing. If you're going to be an Artist, you have to start treating your Art like a business. Your talent is your WEALTH. Your creativity has VALUE.

If you're starting to feel at all uncomfortable reading these words, then it's time for an attitude adjustment, my friend. Here's why: Your attitude about your value as an Artist and the value of what you create has everything ~ and I mean EVERYthing ~ to do with how much bank you make with your art.

Just imagine you were a lawyer. I know some lawyers who are actors, so work with me for a minute here. Just imagine. Okay so you've gone through law school. Before that, you had to get some mighty fine undergrad grades to even get into law school. Then, you passed the Bar. And now you work with clients on cases, in court, in negotiations and settlements. When people ask you what you do for a living, you say you're a lawyer. When people ask you how much you charge for your service, you tell them your hourly rate. It's that simple, right?

Okay so let's switch back to you, the Artist.

When people ask you how much you charge for your service, you tell them your hourly rate. It's that simple, right?

Okay so let's switch back to you, the Artist. You are experienced at your craft. You create your Art with skill and talent. It takes time, effort, sweat, even tears. Maybe you went to school to learn your Art. And now you work with clients, audiences, readers, listeners, in theaters, in stores and online. When people ask you what you do for a living, you say you're an Artist, a Musician, an Author, an Actor, a Designer. When people ask you how much you charge for your Art, you tell them your rates.

It IS that simple.

Do you agree? If not, ~ if your hackles are raised and you feel yourself developing all KINDS of heated arguments against me right now ~ please read the following 6 ways to work on getting your $$$ attitude out of the TOILET:

1) Stop thinking/saying I can't afford that Instead, practice being thankful that you have enough to pay your bills, that you know how to make more money, that you can get another side job whenever you want to. Practice saying, I am not buying or spending money on that right now because I choose to pay my bills and cover my priorities comfortably right now. This simple shift in thinking makes a HUGE difference.

2) Stop thinking/saying I can't make money with my art unless/until the conditions are perfect Work with what you've got to get things rolling. Add to your conditions as the money rolls in. Nothing is ever perfect! And that is absolutely A-Ok.

3) Stop thinking/saying I never win anything Keep thinking/saying that, and you will keep on being right. =/

4) Stop looking the proverbial gift horse in the mouth When money arrives, treat it with respect! Thank it for showing up! Welcome it to the table! Don't badmouth it and say it's always spent before it's earned, or it never lasts for long, or it's never there when you need it. Guess what? You will be proven right, whatever you say. And money will shun you.

5) Stop worrying about not having enough and start thanking your money for being there when you need it Start noticing that money always comes when you need it. Trust that you will have enough. Money will either arrive as cash, as a discount, as an opportunity or as a bullet dodged. Keep track if you like. Eventually, you will start to believe that money rains down on you all the time, in avalanches of abundance. And it will.

6) Stop thinking/saying there's not enough money in the world to go around Have you noticed that money is exchanged digitally these days?... You don't even need to use the actual paper and coin versions anymore. It's all symbolic. Credit cards, wire transfers, online payments ~ they're all symbolic forms of the energy that is money. Money has always represented an exchange of goods and/or services. People are always coming up with new and abundant variations of goods and/or services. As long as people are alive and creating new stuff, that energy will be available. So relax. There will always be more.

Believe me, I realize that these ideas might be new and different. I also realize that you may feel a LOT of resistance, a LOT of uncomfortable feelings when you read these tips. That is just your deep down, deeply held and ingrained money story talking. It's the story you've been holding onto your whole life, due to early influences and environments.

It does not really matter where your early money story came from. What matters is that you change it. Unless of course, it's already made you a millionaire. ;)

Need help changing your money attitude? Let's talk. Message me at for an appt to talk strategy.

8 Ways to UNFunkify Yourself

True confession: I've been napping a lot lately. Like, a LOT. I am so very glad that February is finally OVER. Thinking I might come out of my deep dark winter funk of hibernation tomorrow. That is, IF it doesn't snow again...

Yeah, this month has not been my fave. February rarely is. My birthday, the 19th has always fallen in the middle of school vacation and, as my Mother loves to remind me each year, it usually involves SNOW. My 9th birthday party was cancelled due to a snowstorm. As usual, on that sad day I sought refuge in my closet, my preferred crying space. Then I got all dressed up and blew out my candles and ate birthday cake anyway.

Here's the thing: I can weather any storm if I just have a chance to retreat, lick my wounds and pull myself together. When we take the time to value and take care of ourselves, we can get over the bumps and get back to being fabulous that much faster. Do it without making excuses or giving in to guilt about your needs will DEFinitely take the edge off any funk that winter or other irritating circumstances might throw you into.

Following is my short list of ways to climb out of that funk, with a heaping dose of self love:

1. Practice pleasure rituals.

Feeling good is as important as looking good. Long baths, facials, massages, any type of treatment for the body are not luxuries, they're essentials — no matter how busy your life is. My fave birthday present to myself? A 90 minute hot stone massage. That was the first step out of my deep dark winter funk last week!

2. Use the Feel Good measuring stick.

The “no pain, no gain” school of thought never works for me. I operate according to the pleasure principle: If I'm doing something that makes me feel and look great (yoga, napping), there will be a positive effect on my overall well-being. Disclaimer: This does not imply overindulgence. Overindulgence never feels good. Think hangover. Blech.

3. Accept your current circumstances.

Happiness does not come from success. Success follows happiness. Practice acceptance of your current life with gratitude. Say thank you all the time. Be thankful for your ability to walk, talk, eat, laugh, pay bills, use a computer, drive a car... By most of the world's standards, if you're reading this, you are wealthier than something like 80% of the 6+ billion people on Earth. That's pretty rad.

4. Enjoy great food.

Great food is fundamental to enjoying life, so why deprive yourself? When you're feeling blue, enjoy a little of everything you love. No one needs to eat bread, cheese and dessert every day. Overeating only leads to negative feelings. Love chocolate? Have some! I'm not saying go ahead and gorge on ice cream and chips every night. I'm saying lighten up, already. If you're fighting to stay sane and positive through a few days or weeks of crankiness, it's okay to give yourself a little wiggle room.

5. Feel good AND look good.

I know you might be feeling like a stale piece of pigeon poo but please, don’t go out looking like an unmade bed. Even if you're in a hurry, get dressed, brush your hair, put on some lipgloss and maybe a pair of earrings. Feeling good is also about looking good, and looking good shows respect for yourself.

6. Be real about your feelings.

If you are feeling cranky, don't try to hide it! Be up front with yourself and your loved ones. Ask for some alone time to just be cranky.

Here's what I do when I'm feeling like Miss Whiny Bitchy Crankypants: Hold up my hand when someone tries to talk to me. Hang my Do Not Disturb sign on my door. Let phone calls go straight to voice mail. Return emails only after I'm feeling better. Otherwise, if I try to interact when I'm a crank, things never go well! It's always better to wait it out.

7. Hug and be hugged!

We all need human touch to survive and thrive. Don't just say hi to friends and family! Forget about firm grip handshakes! Move in for the bear hug!! Give hugs freely. Ask for hugs. Welcome hugs. Hugs ROCK.

Best Kept Secret: Hugging for 20 seconds or more boosts your immune system and your happiness factor. I practice the 20 second hug with my yoga instructor, Michelle whenever I see her! Gives me an awesometastic moto push to get to yoga class, too. ;)

8. Get out and have some fun!

For my birthday, not only did I get myself an amazing hot stone massage, but I also decided to skip the birthday cake and go out with friends for some live music instead. Open Mic Night at the Harvest Wine Gallery in Dennis Village was a blast! Thanks Kelli, Ruth, Tad, Stacy, Amy, Maria, Holly, Anthony, Kami and Joey for being there, I had so much fun!

The next day, I took my Sunshine Girl daughter out for a fancy dinner and a show. Then the day after that, I took myself shopping! Finally got my new iPhone, yay! Happy Birthday to ME. You know how it is, a little retail therapy goes a LONG way.

There you have it, my short list of ways to UnFunkify your winter self. Go have yourself some fun. Then come back and tell me all about it. Make me jelly!!!

Have a great weekend!

Be Your Self

Be Your Self. How often have you heard that before? A million times, right?? I know, it’s not so easy to do. But it is ALWAYS super important to practice, MOST especially when you are under pressure to conform. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that conforming is the fastest road to Zombieland. If you conform all the time, you will eventually lose sight of your true Self. To help you stay alive and not fall in with that bad company, The Undead,  I’m here to show you a few ways to rediscover YOU: She.Colors.Flowers.

1) Define your Self. Oscar Wilde said it best: "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." But who is that Self? What does it mean to you to be YOU? One way to find out is to ask yourself a bunch of questions. Do my exercise of 200 things: Take a half hour and write down 200 things about YOU. That’s right, 200. From the color of your hair (purple, anyone?...) to your favorite color. When you get to #98 and you think you can’t think of any more, think again. You are full of surprises, I am sure of it. Get to #200.

2) Let the past be the past. If you keep re-reading the same old chapter in the book of your life, how will you ever get to read the next chapter?? Allow yourself to grow. Scary? Yes. Worth the risk and pain? Absolutely.

Turn. The. Page.

3) Quit caring about what other people think of you. Some people will like you and some won’t. Why care? If you are being your true Self, living on your own terms and someone doesn’t like that true expression of you, then maybe it is time to re-evaluate your relationship with that person. If it is a toxic relationship, treat it like the poison it probably is and bring it to the nearest hazardous waste dump right away. You will thank your Self very soon, trust me!

4) Be honest, with your Self and with others. What have you got to hide? If you feel like you are holding too many secrets (for yourself or for someone else), write them down. Once they are written down, burn them (safely!) and watch them disappear as they turn to ash. Or, if you’re feeling really bold, tell a trusted friend. Maybe that friend can help you stop hiding and start living.

5) Treat yourself as well as you would treat a best friend. Do whatever you can to be nice to your Self. Talk to your Self like you would talk to a really good friend. Be supportive. Say nice things. Give yourself a hug! You need love, affection and emotional support as much as the next person. Maybe even more. If you can’t reach out to a real, physical friend, at least reach out to YOU.

6) OWN and express your individuality and style. If you want to wear red lipstick every day, wear it! If you want to follow a vegetarian diet, do it! If you want to take a run at lunchtime every day, good for you! There is no reason to let anyone dictate your life to you. You deserve to make your own decisions.

hel looks kirsi 25

7) Stop comparing yourself to others. Comparing your Self to others is the best, quickest way to drive yourself mad. As in Crazytown. YOU are the only YOU on this Earth. Everyone else has their own challenges and struggles, the ones meant for them. Why spend your time trying to be like someone else (what would Oscar Wilde say to that??) when you could be spending it more wisely figuring out who YOU really are. The next time you catch your Self making a comparison between you and that model on the cover of whatever magazine, STOP! Make a quick list of your top ten best accomplishments or features. Got great hair? List it. Great scrapbooking skills? List that. Play an instrument like nobody’s business? That’s right, list it.

8) Accept that some days you’re IT and other days you are just… not. Sometimes, you will be the center of positive attention. People will want to be with you, sit next to you, call you and ask your advice. Other days, people might roll their eyes at or even ignore you. But if you can respect your own Self, shrug it all off and say, “Whatever! I am who I am!” then others will respect you, too. Bonus: You will no longer have to rely on others for your sense of Self.

Thanks for spending time with me here today. I hope I inspired you to:

1) Make a decision to take some action 2) Try out one of these ways to Be Your Self 3) Tell someone else about this blog. Why keep a good thing to your Self?

This is so simple, yet life changing...

This week, I'm extending an incredible opportunity to you from my business mentor, Ali Brown.  She was featured on the ABC show, "Secret Millionaire" last year and has won many awards for her work.  I can also tell you that she is a seriously fun and down to earth gal.  How do I know?  I've been taking her Elevate "class" since its inception in January 2012 and gotten to know her through our course work and our private Facebook group.  Aside from this rare access to a young, female business tycoon with lots of experience and the generosity to share it with others, I've also gotten to know scores of other successful entrepreneurial ladies (and some men, too), all of us willing to help and support each other. There is no doubt in my mind that there is nothing else that can match Elevate for quality and more if you're looking for guidance with your business, or even the glimmer of an idea for a business.

You're hearing a lot of talk about this "big world of opportunity" available to entrepreneurs everywhere, and especially for women (and super cool guys!).

But the truth is... very few mentors are diving in deeper and telling you what's REALLY important for growing a money making business you love.

My own mentor, Ali Brown has built a business into the millions, but when she started years ago, her first big goal was to just make a full time living with a little venture of her own. And from there, she kept setting higher and higher goals, finding her way one step at a time.

If you're ready to find your next level, or you're getting a bit lost along the way, I recommend you check out Ali's new THRIVE video series at [Open in new window]

I agree with Ali that we're still seeing too many business owners "running on the hamster wheel" and not tapping into a few *simple and proven systems* that can help them make dramatic profits and live an extraordinary life.

She just released Video 2 of her new THRIVE video series, and I wanted to share it with you, because it includes:

* How to take a single topic you love, and turn it into a DOZEN+ income streams

* The 8 traits of the *most successful* entrepreneurs (see how many you have)

* 3 simple keys to a thriving and purposeful business (this is so simple, let life changing)

* Why, for women entrepreneurs especially, our STRATEGIES and ACTIONS are not matching up with the possibilities right in front of us (and how to fix this)

* And more.

You can access VIDEO 2 and the entire THRIVE series here: [Open in new window]

No matter what level you're currently aiming for as an entrepreneur, get ready for some FRESH ideas and strategies from Ali that you can implement IMMEDIATELY. I can tell you first-hand as someone in her Elevate training program, that Ali's strategies can truly change the way you work!

***Ali has been my mentor for over a year now and I have made huge strides with her Elevate program.  I believe in this program so much that I am offering extra bonuses when you sign up for Elevate through me:

- 50% off any service of mine booked in 2012 or 2013

- PLUS - and this is HUGE! -- 30 minutes of complimentary, one-on-one coaching by me personally each month that you are in Ali's Elevate program for the next 12 months

P.S. You should see some of the comments these videos are getting. Ali has really struck a chord with her message. You can see what I mean once you log in here: [Open in new window]
