You probably know by now that when you come here, you get more than just your average personal growth and business advice. My approach is definitely holistic, meaning I present all kinds of methods and perspectives when helping you to improve yourself. Yep, I'm all about that gestalt thing.
So today, I'm asking one simple question: Are you good enough?
Loaded question, I know. Loaded to the brim. But important to examine, especially for all of you performing artists who are constantly under the microscope. I know, it sucks.
Because let's be real, self-esteem issues, feelings of inadequacy and even competitive jealousy are all rooted in this one question: Am I good enough?
Those feelings of being unworthy, undeserving, not good enough are emotions that can wreak havoc with your confidence AND your success.
You know how it plays out: You prep for that big audition, certain that everyone there will be more talented than you are (even though you have no basis for it). You get there -- probably after several transportation challenges like late trains, forgotten addresses, etc -- look around at your competition and immediately (even though you have no basis for it) feel like the rookie in the room. You go into the audition already feeling like a failure, even though you have no basis for it. You stumble through your audition, paralyzed with fear, knowing it's not even close to your best work. You don't get called back.
Even if this has never actually happened to you before, I bet you've played this scene in your head more than once as your worst possible scenario, amiright??
But as I'm sure you've heard before, approaching your career from a place of fear will never get you very far.
Here's the thing: Fear, doubt and worry are what I call the Bermuda Triangle of negativity.
Once you get caught up in that triangle, it sucks you down like the whirlpool in Pirates of the Caribbean. Tough to bounce back from.
But NOT IMPOSSIBLE.
TBH, one of my fave activities is pulling people back from the brink of that whirlpool! It's so exciting and satisfying to help artists just like you find the courage and confidence to really go after your dreams with gusto. Even if your dream is to dance in a musical when you don't think you're a dancer, or maybe you want to sing at 54 Below in NYC
(wait, Emily Wade Adams and Anthony J. Teixeira, didn't you guys just do that on February 1st, 2017?? Congrats!! xoxo)
-- you have to believe in yourself, go after what you really want and ditch that Bermuda Triangle once and for all.
