Have you read my previous three posts about The Art of Money yet? If not, check them on my blog: The Money Block, Treat Your Money Like a Work of Art and How to Charm Lady Luck.
This week, it's time to talk about the home you give your money. Think that's trivial? Think again.
How you bank your money is one of the most important factors to consider in bringing the cash to you and keeping it flowing. Just like you would give a piece of art, a designer handbag or a classic guitar a special place of honor in your home, your money also deserves to be treated like gold. Show your money that you care about it, that you're happy to have it. Show some love and gratitude for it by giving it a nice place to live.
Your money shows up in a few different places and needs a few different areas to nest in. Think about the following:
1) Your wallet
What does your wallet look like? Do you keep your cash, credit cards and other monetary items in a place that you're proud of pulling out of your handbag or pocket? If your wallet is in tatters or stuffed with coupons, then I guarantee you, no self respecting $100 bill would be caught dead hanging out there!
Start showing your money some love by cleaning out your wallet and throwing away all the scraps of paper, bits of broken jewelry (trust me, I know they live in your change pocket), ancient ticket stubs and other detritus. Then go splurge on a new one that isn't ripped or torn. A wallet the color of money -- metallics are great, but also blue or black (it's a feng shui thing) or of course, green -- symbolizes wealth. You can find really nice ones for under $30 so, no excuses here.
2) Your bank accounts
How do you bank your money? Do you keep all your cash stuffed in your mattress? Do you keep a "death grip" on your cash at all times? Do you pay your bills on time? Do you let your cash breathe and grow in checking and savings accounts? Do you check in with your money regularly, making sure all is well? Or do you avoid and ignore it, hoping your money will magically take care of itself?
These questions must be answered and dealt with, my friend. Not just once but REGULARLY. You cannot expect your money to grow and thrive if you don't nurture it. Think of it like a garden that needs loving care and attention. Develop your green thumb. If you don't know about money things, then get out there and LEARN. It is that simple.
3) Your financial plan
You do have a financial plan, right?? As in, a plan for your future that involves your money... Yeah, okay, well, here's the thing. It is absolutely vital for you to have a financial plan that fits into your Big Picture. Such a plan might include savings accounts, life insurance policies, CDs, real estate, etc. At least set some GOALS related to financial plans. My advice? Find a financial advisor that you can trust and start asking questions. Get help.
There! Doesn't that feel better? Once you have a sweet crib set up for your money, your money will start showing up more often and staying in your pocket longer. Can't hurt to try!
