Sometimes it's really hard to be a business owner, I know that all too well. Clients need your focused support, partners want you to read their minds, family members deserve your attention, potential clients need to learn more about you, friends look for you in your free time, projects call out to you from the stack of folders on your desk and then BOOM! Some crazy toxic ex-friend starts copying your work, out of nowhere!
Yes, people, it happens. When you put yourself and your work out there -- and yes, you MUST put yourself and your work out there in order to grow your following and your sales -- people will definitely start to copy you. I mean, like VERBATIM. Out and out plagarism, right here online, right here in River City!
The copying is usually not the end of the world. Don't get me wrong, it feels totally icky to see your own words on someone else's page and know that they were outright STOLEN. But usually a simple cease and desist order takes care of the short term violation of copyright.
The longterm problem is sometimes harder to overcome. Sometimes, dealing with a copycat can push you even further back into your protective shell than before. Please don't let that happen!
Keep on putting yourself and your work out there. Don't be afraid. Share your gifts with the world and let everyone know how passionate you are about your creative projects.
If copying is the greatest form of flattery, then your copycats are simply saying, WOW! You're amazing! I wish I could be as amazing as you!
While it's super sad to think that some people can't create their own work without copying others, the silver lining is that you must be one awesometastical rock star for others to copy you like that, amiright??
Put yourself out there. You never know how much magic you're going to create.
