With my first post of 2015, I'm kicking off a series called, The Art of Money. This week, in the first of the series, I'm talking about The Money Block.
Just like writer's block, The Money Block can totally freeze you in your tracks, paralyze your creativity AND your productivity. That paralysis happens because a block is a big ginormous imaginary wall between you and the thing that's important. Writer's block throws all kinds of authors, poets, songwriters and many other Artists into hours and days -- sometimes even weeks or longer -- of procrastination, distraction, frustration and of course, zero words on the page.
The Money Block works in a similar way, especially if you're an Artist.
Here's the thing, when you're gripped in the throes of The Money Block, you feel like you have zero access to money at all. Like you've been cut off from the source. Like you'll never see it again in your lifetime. You may experience panic, because The Money Block makes you think you know for sure that you will never earn or receive any money again, EVER. What's even tougher to take is that this block situation can occur after a period of prolific money flow, just as easily as a period of no flow at all.
As Artists, The Money Block can show up more often than not, amiright?? In between projects or gigs, after completing a show or a piece of work, you look around and go, OH SHIT, what NOW?? New ideas are nowhere to be found. You're stuck with no plan and have no idea how to earn money next. You're paralyzed because you feel like whatever you come up with might fail and you CAN'T fail! You need money!!
What to do? Try this: treat it the same way you would a creativity or writer's block. How does that work? Well, my own method includes changing gears and allowing myself to be distracted for a bit, take a nap or otherwise step away from the challenging blockage for a short time. Get some fresh air.
OPERATIVE WORDS: for a SHORT time.
Same goes for dealing with The Money Block. When you feel yourself getting uptight about your finances, worrying about how you're going to pay your bills, try this: step away from the numbers for a bit. Go outside and play! Or think about how many times you have managed to get by and pay for things in the past. Remember how money always shows up, somehow, when you really need it.
After that short time doing something else, come back to your money issues with fresh energy and approach them from a totally different angle, just like you would a creative project. Think about different ways of accessing or earning money. Can you make stuff and sell it? Can you sell other people's stuff? Can you sell anything that's hiding in your attic or basement, maybe have a yard sale? Can you write a short book about your talent and sell that online? Can you teach what you're talented at?
Hhmmm... See how stepping away can get those creative juices flowing again? Same goes for unblocking The Money Block.
Your biggest challenge? Newsflash: It's NOT The Money Block.
Your biggest challenge is YOU. That little voice in your head that keeps you second guessing, doubting, making excuses and playing it safe will also keep you in money paralysis. Stepping away is the equivalent to opening your hand and letting go of those worries, fears and doubts.
Try it. This week, every time you start feeling your fist clench, your stomach tighten and your brain whir with fears and worries about your money situation, breathe deeply. Allow yourself to step away from the problem in your mind for a few minutes. Come back with fresh ideas. Then tell me about it! I'd love to hear your experiences!
You know I'm here for you if you want help with this (I have a ton of experience with The Money Block!). Message me and we'll set up a time to chat and make a plan for you to make some bank.
Up next week: The Art of Money, Part 2:Treat Your Money Like a Work of Art.
Yeah, you heard me right.
